Spring Tune-ups
Spring is a time that we often feel motivated to get things done. Perhaps it’s the extra energy from having a few sunny days, the fresh air coming in through open windows, or the inspiration we get from looking around seeing mother nature starting so many new tasks. Whatever it may be, spring is the time we start to think about getting everything cleaned up and tuned up - ready to go for summer. In addition to the getting the house, yard and car back into tip tip shape, it’s also important to include yourself in this spring refresh! When coming up with a checklist for your own spring tune up, look to a vehicle maintenance check for inspiration.
Check under the hood: Might be time to book that annual physical with your doctor (especially if it’s been a few years since that “yearly” exam). Having an idea of your general health and catching things before they become a bigger problem will serve you well in the long run. What could be solved by a few simple lifestyle or dietary changes now may not have a simple solution if the problem is left to compound and go undetected for a long time.
Check the tires: If you spend time standing for long periods, walking or at the gym (or intend to dabble a bit in trying to do more of that), check the tread and cushioning on your shoes. Having the proper footwear for the activity you’re doing can help prevent slip injuries and ensure you’ve got some good cushioning while you exercise - which can minimize the risk of developing some types of foot, knee and back pain. If you put on a new pair and can’t believe the difference, you’ve probably had your old shoes for too long!
Check the windshield: Our vision can change overtime and because these changes are often gradual, you may not notice the compensations you’ve been making (or don’t want to admit you need to make them!) If you notice you’re struggling to see things clearly, having issues driving at night, holding menus or papers further away to read, or are getting frequent headaches, a visit to the optometrist just might be in store. Even if you haven’t noticed symptoms, it’s still worth getting checked out. Some health conditions have early warning signs that can be detected by a thorough eye exam from a professional. If you work on a computer all day, it might also be worth asking if blue-light filtering lenses would be beneficial for you.
Check the battery: If you are jam packed and over-booked, consider not signing up for quite so many things this spring/summer. See what could be trimmed back in your schedule and have an honest chat with yourself about your priorities. Ensure that you are making time for the things and people that matter most to you. If you are struggling physically, mentally or emotionally, it might be time to consider if you need a little recharging. A small get away for a change of scenery or setting aside time for the things that you are passionate about and surrounding yourself with the people you love can all help re-fill your cup and get you charged up again.
So go ahead and do a bit of spring cleaning around the house, get the car ready for summer exploring and the yard ready for BBQ’s but don’t forget about your own spring tune up. Make sure you’ll be ready for your next adventure, whatever it may be!
